Why are you vegan.... the question of a lifetime.
        Author
        Barry Horton
        Summary

Often times however, i don't think the questioner is actually looking for an answer.  It  can often feel like a person is actually sayin… (truncated)

I sent out an email for guests to tell me their favorite recipe that they were missing and wanting veganized. My first request was for a vegan pinkabet, a traditional Filipino dish. This is a complex dish with multiple components. It might be labor intensive but it is well worth the time! You could make the vegan fish sauce created by Sylvia Fountaine ahead of time to help cut down on cooking time. Hope you try this recipe and let me know what your thoughts are. For the past three weeks I have been stuck. So stuck. I couldn’t get any writing done on my book. I haven’t been able to write a blog post. I have had an ultimate case of writer’s block. I was so stuck, that I couldn’t think of what to pack for my kids lunches, what to make for dinner or how to get my chores done. The only thing I wanted to do was watch Grace and Frankie and eat popcorn. Now, that writer is funny. I wonder if they ever get stuck. I am an entrepreneur. I am writing a… (truncated)

The transition to going vegan can be challenging for many of us. We were raised with foods that are nostalgic or that spark joy with just our sensory memory. This challenge came about for a customer that came in to Sanctuary Bistro who said they were struggling with transitioning to veganism because of candy bars. Food waste is a global problem that can only be solved on a local level. It is estimated that one-third of the food produced is wasted. Yet, 795 million people on our planet do not have enough food to sustain themselves. More people die of hunger than AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis combined. According to the World Wildlife Fund, the world produces enough food for everyone on the planet today. People lack food not because we don’t produce enough, but because the food produced is not… (truncated)

        Summary
We celebrated completing 4 successful years of running Sanctuary Bistro on August 1, 2018. We have learned a lot from the start and owning a restaurant and it is not for the feint of heart. There has been laughter and tears... joy and utter fear. But lots and lots of love!!!Barry has worked 19,800 hours. (Traditional 40 hour work week is 8,340 hours in four years)We went from a staff of 5 to a team of 13. We have been able to get benefits for our full time employees. Improvement is… (truncated)

"When we think of community, we tend to think of our neighborhood or the places that we go on a regular basis.  But the world grows smaller with the advent of social media and the like. We are able to see how small this world is and how much of an impact our choices make on those not as close as we once thought. We are all community and the world is our home. If we don't fight for it who will? Ecoviva has joined the fight. Check out their story about Inclusive Disaster Preparedness… (truncated)

"I live in Richmond and have been trapping, neutering, and releasing cats and it is a seriously overwhelming task. If you miss a cat, and they have a litter that is 5 new cats. Make sure that you are adopting cats rather than getting cats from breeders. There are so many cats that need homes. Community Concern For Cats share below how to foster a cat.  You can donate to them or even better help foster a cat or three." - Jennifer Jones Horton, owner Sanctuary Bistro By Jennie Richard… (truncated)

"It was our dream in opening this restaurant that we would be able to support programs that are fighting the systems of the status quo. As a Special Education teacher, I have worked with children who have experienced trauma at a very young age. I am so grateful for the work that Bawar is doing in supporting survivors of sexual violence in the Bay through their healing process.. I hope we are all fighting for change while they are fighting for healing!" -Jennifer  From its beginnings… (truncated)

      • How are young women criminalized in America? Feb 3, 2018

        Jennifer Jones-Horton · Community · Non-profits

"I had the honor of  knowing Sam as a staff at Sanctuary Bistro.  They were very involved in local non-profits before and during their short time at the restaurant. They followed their passion to focus on this amazing work. It takes each of us as individuals working hard to right the systemic wrongs of the world. It is tiring and painful watching injustices happen right before your eyes but it does happen. It is time to become involved, like Sam did to make a difference. One shift t… (truncated)

      • Sanctuary is a defining term Jan 12, 2018

        Jennifer Jones-Horton · Community · Compassion

The word sanctuary is one of the defining terms of our historical moment. In the face of virulent Trumpian xenophobia, jurisdictions including cities, towns, and universities have declared themselves sanctuary cities. They are limiting cooperation with federal immigration authorities so as to protect people whose only crime is fleeing intolerable circumstances to find a better home for themselves and their families.Sanctuary, with its connotations of refuge and home, seems to be a p… (truncated)
